I DON’T DRINK COFFEE!
A CASE STUDY EXCERPT FROM GOOD BYE:
Paul, who was leaving the organization he had worked in for the previous ten years, told us the story of the leaving gift his line manager had bought for him with the proceeds of the staff collection. The gift was something he would never choose, let alone use. It was a coffee maker, and Paul didn’t drink coffee. This felt crass and insensitive, and he can still remember the feeling of embarrassment as he thanked his boss; he was too polite to say anything else.
What he wanted to say was, this shows you clearly don’t know me, and you have not taken the time to talk to someone who does know me and who could have aided you in buying a more heartfelt and useful gift .
